The Power of Choosing Your Distraction

Outwitting Wickedness

Chapter 4: The Art of Distraction

The Power of Discipline James had always tried to be a good husband. He was friendly, reliable, and tried his best, but it was never enough.

His wife had an expectation that he was not able to meet. She dreamed of someone taller, wealthier, and fitter. The reminders of what he wasn't bothered his self-esteem until, in the end, she left him.

The blow to his psyche was deep. He was spiraling for months—lost, bewildered, and empty. He couldn't even recognize himself in the mirror. It wasn't just that he was alone, it was the weight of not being good enough. All his insecurities, those that were buried alive, surfaced. But then something changed.

He began to stop moping about his misery. He started small. He went to the gym, not for a big reveal, but because he knew it would push him. He built a habit. Even on days when he felt like crawling, he showed up. In time, he didn't just grow stronger in body—he became more assertive in mind as well. Next came his diet. He started taking better care of his diet, not for anybody, but simply because he found pleasure in it. He started reading about investments, with this new hunger to learn, not to impress anybody, but for self-growth. What he discovered was simple but profound: Discipline was his distraction.

Rather than attacking the things that held him back, he applied his energy to something he could control. Little by little, however, he began to notice the changes. He didn't just get into shape; he gained confidence, purpose, and clarity. He even built his own company eventually, all because he chose the discipline of improvement over the disarray of doubt.

James cut no slack—whatever had to be done, he'd do it, even if no one was around to witness him.
